We’re so excited to announce our collaboration with The Dinner Ladies! To celebrate, we sat down with the founders Sophie Gilliatt and Katherine Westwood to get all the details about their incredible business.
For those unfamiliar, how would you describe The Dinner Ladies?
The Dinner Ladies take away the stress of thinking about, shopping for, preparing and cooking dinner by delivering it to your door, so that you can enjoy great, homemade food every day. Our prepared dinners are made from scratch using only natural ingredients and no rubbish. It’s honest, nourishing food that’s full of flavour – and best of all it’s food that tastes like home. We want to help people so they have more time, less stress, and more happiness.
Why did you start The Dinner Ladies?
It was around the time when we both had babies and toddlers. One of our friends who was going back to work said she pay us to make a couple of dinners for her. We both thought: ooh, that’s a good idea – if one person could use that, you can be sure there would be others as well. There just wasn’t anything around in those days, besides frozen convenience food at the supermarket and takeaway. Nothing wholesome and well made that you’d feel happy eating with your family. And boy, we couldn’t have lived without it for the last 13 years – our kids have grown up on the Dinner Ladies!!
How does The Dinner Ladies differ from other meal delivery services?
There’s versatility and freedom – you can order from The Dinner Ladies like an a la carte menu instead of a subscription. This year we made the switch to a frozen menu to lock in flavour and nutrients and to give the food a longer shelf life. The other big difference is that with a lot of other delivery services, you receive groceries and a recipe and have to cook yourself, which is fine, but when you’re really up against it, the last thing you want to do is start prepping from scratch. Our dinners are either completely prepared, or all the hard part’s done and you just have to finish them off.
How did you two meet?
We met when our two oldest boys started kindy together in 2003 (they’re now 22!). The boys became best friends and we started doing a lot together as families. A few years later – in 2007, we started cooking in the shed in Katherine’s back yard on a converted trailer and two camp stoves.
Your favourite dish of all time?
Katherine would find it hard to go past our classic lasagne – it’s a winner with everyone and takes care of itself in the oven while you get on with life! For Sophie, it’s the citrus-brined, free-range roast chicken – who doesn’t love a roast chicken? Brining makes it super juicy and golden. Tear it up over a bed of leaves and you have the simplest and loveliest of dinners.
What did you find to be the biggest struggle when your kids were young?
Getting out the door with babies and toddlers. We still remember that thing of it suddenly being midday and having no idea where the time had gone. Every trip was a major expedition, involving several changes of clothes, provisions, toys. You get better with practice but it’s still not like grabbing your keys and going.
Any favourite advice you were given as a new mum?
No one ever said this exactly, but we wish they had. None of it will matter when your baby is an adult – no one will know whether they used a dummy, whether they had the odd bottle of formula, whether they had the occasional Lion King marathon, if they co-slept or if you did control crying. Love them, look after yourself and it will all be fine.
What do you love so much about Nourishing Bubs?
We love that we’re like-minded. We have so much in common – just like Nourishing Bubs, our food is also made with 100% natural ingredients, snap-frozen for extended shelf life and locking in nutrients, and no rubbish (no added preservatives, thickeners or other additives). What’s not to love?!
